Giampietro+Smith, a design studio based in New
York City, was founded in 2003 by Rob Giampietro and Kevin Smith.
Prior to starting their studio, Rob and Kevin worked together at
Winterhouse, an award-winning design studio owned by Jessica Helfand
and William Drenttel in Falls Village, CT.
Giampietro+Smith's current clients include a range of cultural
institutions including Gagosian Gallery, Creative Time, Knoll, Luhring
Augustine Gallery, and NYU, as well as internationally-known artists
such as Taryn Simon, Ghada Amer, and Gregory Crewdson. The studio
also collaborates with a number of global nonprofit organizations
including the United Nations and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
TB & Malaria. They've also consulted regularly on a wide range
of projects, most notably for the NYC2012 Olympic Bid and The New
England Journal of Medicine. Rob and Kevin have written a regular
column for BusinessWeek Online on branding and corporate identity,
and have commented on design matters for organizations such as The
New York Times and NPR. The studio's work has won numerous awards
including design distinctions from I.D. Magazine, Print magazine,
the Type Director's Club, and AIGA. Rob and Kevin are board members
and co-creative directors of Topic Magazine.
Rob Giampietro is a designer, writer, and teacher.
Other than his work at Winterhouse and Giampietro+Smith, Rob has
worked for Pentagram, The New York Times Magazine, and Hearst Publications.
He has written essays and design criticism for publications like
Dot Dot Dot, Design Observer, and Emigre; participated in lectures
and panels at the Type Director's Club, Yale University, and on
NPR; curated projects for organizations like the Design Institute
at the University of Minnesota; and served on several graphic design
juries including the 85th Art Directors Club Awards. He teaches
and advises senior thesis projects at Parsons School of Design in
New York and has also taught in the graduate graphic design program
at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Rob is a
graduate of Yale University.
Kevin Smith is a designer, typographer, and teacher.
Prior to his work at Winterhouse and Giampietro+Smith, Kevin worked
for Tsang Seymour Design in New York City, where his projects included
work for Rizzoli Publishing, Acquevella Galleries, and The Metropolitan
Museum of Art. During his time at Winterhouse Kevin's projects
ranged from publishing and editorial development to new media,
including work for the Yale Law School, Booz Allen Hamilton, and
the White House. Print Magazine selected him as one of 2007 ’s “New
Visual Artists: 20 Talents Under 30.” Kevin teaches
communication design at Parsons School of Design. Kevin is a graduate
of the University of Hartford Art School.
