The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria’s 2003 Annual Report, designed by Giampietro+Smith with a cover photographed by John Rae, is a winner in this year’s PDN 2005 Competition. The cover was named an “Official Selection and Finalist—Corporate Design Category,” and John Rae was commended as well. The photograph was made on assignment during the distribution of mosquito nets in the Sonakasalampakkulam Refugee Village, Sri Lanka.

By the end of 2003, the Global Fund had become one of the world’s biggest financiers of programs to fight its three diseases, committing over US$ 2.1 billion into 227 grants in 124 different countries. Produced to be as up-to-the-minute as possible, the project involved the design of maps, sophisticated information graphics, and detailed financial statements, as well as far-reaching photographic research.
